King Charles III<\/a> has been admitted to hospital after suffering \ufeff"temporary side effects" during his "scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer", Buckingham Palace has said.<\/p>\n The 76-year-old \ufeff"required a short period of observation in hospital" on Thursday morning, the palace said.<\/p>\n His \ufeffafternoon engagements were postponed "as a precautionary measure" and "acting on medical advice".<\/p>\n BREAKING: \ufeff<\/strong>Prime Minister Anthony Albanese calls federal election for May 3<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n \ufeffKing Charles has since returned to Clarence House, his residence in London.<\/p>\n His program for Friday will also be "rescheduled".\ufeff<\/p>\n The full statement from the palace, sent on Friday morning in Australia, reads: "\ufeffFollowing scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, The King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital. His Majesty's afternoon engagements were therefore postponed.<\/p>\n "His Majesty has now returned to Clarence House and as a precautionary measure, acting on medical advice, tomorrow's diary programme will also be rescheduled.<\/p>\n "His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result."<\/p>\n READ MORE: \ufeff<\/strong>Six dead after tourist submarine sinks in Red Sea<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n The King was due to travel to Birmingham for a full day of engagements on Friday.<\/p>\n His Majesty was taken to the London Clinic, the same place he underwent surgery in January last year for an enlarged prostate.<\/p>\n It is also the same hospital where Catherine, the Princess of Wales<\/a>, had abdominal surgery in January of the same year. Kate was later diagnosed with cancer and underwent a course of preventative chemotherapy which ended in September. The 43-year-old is now in remission and has resumed a near-full program of royal events<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n A palace spokesperson says the monarch travelled to and from the hospital by car on Thursday and was not accompanied by Queen Camilla<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n He was said to be "on good form" at Clarence House, according to The Times, and was working on state papers and making calls from his study.<\/p>\n The spokesperson said: "His Majesty was due to receive credentials from the ambassadors of three different nations this afternoon.<\/p>\n "Tomorrow, he was due to undertake four public engagements in Birmingham, and is greatly disappointed to be missing them on this occasion."<\/p>\n The monarch was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer<\/a> in February 2024 and has been having regular treatment since.<\/p>\n Buckingham Palace has not revealed the nature of the King's treatment.<\/p>\n In April last year the monarch returned to public-facing duties after an extended period away on the advice of his medical team.<\/p>\n Among his busy schedule through 2024 was a visit to Australia and Samoa in October<\/a>, in what was the King's longest, and most gruelling, trip abroad since his diagnosis.<\/p>\n The King and Queen are due to travel to Italy early next month<\/a> for a state visit which will coincide with their 20th wedding anniversary on April 9.<\/p>\n Earlier this week Buckingham Palace were forced to postpone a visit to the Vatican<\/a> and a meeting with Pope Francis because of the Pontiff's ongoing health issues.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
