MUU, a food-tech company focused on animal-free dairy in Thailand, has secured an undisclosed strategic investment from investors, including A2D Ventures, Glocalink Singapore, Leave a Nest Capital, Brinc (a global venture accelerator with a focus on food innovation), and an unnamed Japanese food conglomerate.

The funding will accelerate MUU’s mission to transform the dairy industry through the application of precision fermentation technology. The goal is to offer sustainable, ethical, and healthier dairy alternatives for Southeast Asia and other global markets.

It also plans to scale its operations across Asia and expanding globally.

Founded by a team comprising an ex-Chevron engineer, a former TikTok marketing leader, and a PhD scientist with global research experience, MUU aims to address significant sustainability challenges within the traditional dairy sector.

Leveraging precision fermentation, the company produces bioidentical milk proteins designed to replicate cow’s milk’s taste and nutritional value, enabling their use in various applications such as coffee, ice cream, and chocolate, all without involving animals.

MUU’s milk proteins are described as lactose-free, cholesterol-free, hormone- and antibiotic-free, and produced without animal cruelty. The production process is highlighted as significantly more environmentally friendly than conventional dairy, utilising 90 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions, land, and water.

The startup has already demonstrated early commercial traction, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lotte Fine Chemical. This partnership is seen as a strategic move that could potentially unlock future distribution channels and provide valuable market insights.

Additionally, MUU has received sample requests from major coffee chains and food and beverage producers across Thailand, Singapore, and Japan.

MUU’s technological foundation is built upon a four-stage process: strain development, fermentation, purification, and formulation. The resulting milk proteins reportedly deliver the same functional and sensory properties as dairy derived from cows but without the associated environmental and ethical costs. The company specifically uses microbial fermentation to produce these proteins, aiming to replicate the functionality of milk in every way.

Ankit Upadhyay, General Partner at A2D Ventures, commented on MUU’s strategic positioning, stating, “MUU’s vision of animal-free dairy for Asia is bold, timely, and deeply needed, given 80 per cent of Asians are lactose intolerant—and their team has the chops to pull it off.”

Dr Yukihiro Maru, Founder and Group CEO of Leave a Nest Group, added: “MUU’s precision fermentation platform addresses the health, environmental, and ethical challenges of traditional dairy, while paving the way for a more secure and sustainable food future.”
