Man found dead in regional Victoria, son under police guard in hospital

A homicide investigation is under way after a man was found dead on Victoria's Phillip Island.

Police were called to a home at the intersection of Church Street and Justice Road in Cowes, a township on the island with a population of just under 7000, after reports the body of a man aged in his 80s had been found.

A second man aged in his 50s, believed to be the victim's son, was found with suspected self-inflicted injuries at a car park in Ventnor, about 6 kilometres from Cowes.

The son was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne where he remains under police guard in a serious but stable condition.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation is ongoing.
